History
In 1870 Hélène de Pérusse des Cars, daughter of the French Amédée Joseph de Pérusse comte des Cars and her husband Henry Standish had a close friendship with Edward VII and Queen Alexandra so made a country house within easy reach of Windsor and London.
The original building was a mixture of Gothic and Tudor and the turrets that were built were a reminder of the French influences. Berystede is named because the land was pastureland, the old English word 'bere' indicates pastureland and 'stede' means the sight of a dwelling.
