About

Essentially a magnificent Victorian ballroom, the hall is now an integral element of Charlton Down Village Hall, and was originally designed by the architect G. T. Hine. The ballroom was built in 1894/5 to serve the community and was formerly part of Herrison Hospital, a Victorian Mental Infirmary, closed down in 1992. It has recently been restored to something of its former glory thanks to tireless campaigning by local residents after threat of demolition during the redevelopment of the hospital site within the village.

Facilities

Ballroom

The ballroom has a maximum capacity of 200 people and boasts an impressive hammer-beam ceiling, a resilient wooden sprung dancefloor and tall arched windows with stained-glass upper transoms framing beautiful countryside views, making it a traditional, stylish wedding venue. Herrison Hall also features a large extended stage with excellent sight-lines and vibrant natural acoustics.

Furniture

The venue includes tables and chairs in the standard hire charge. Alongside 276 chairs, of which 27 are folding, they can present a choice of 15 folding rectangular and 9 folding square tables, plus 5 non-matching folding rectangular formica-topped examples.

Lighting

Stage lighting is also included with Selecon Acclaim PC spots, lighting bars to either side of the hall, Selecon Parcans as well as a further eight spare sockets. Lights are controlled through a 24-channel set of dimmers; extra lighting can be arranged if required.

Sound And Visuals

A Casio Celviano 8-voice full-size keyboard Electronic Piano is available, which can be put through the PA if required. The PA has two lapel mics, one cabled mic, four radio hand-mics plus two overhead mics, and an incorporated hearing loop is available in the hall on request. DVDs can be broadcast using the large screen and laptop computer, also with connections for iPod and/or guitar.

Catering

As it is to all intents and purposes a DIY venue, Herrison Hall invites you either to bring in your own food and drink, or to engage the services of an independent catering firm. The events team at the hall has a list of recommended caterers and other suppliers for you to take advantage of if you like. Licences for entertainment and the sale of alcohol are included in the wedding package.

Accommodation

There is no accommodation available at the venue, but plenty will be found in Charminster or in the nearby town of Dorchester.
