History

Cley Windmill has a rich backstory that will give your wedding a historical atmosphere.

The windmill itself dates from the early 18th century. It stopped operating as a windmill in 1921 when the Blount family took over and converted it into accommodation. Since then, it has gathered significance and celebrity interest - among others, Elizabeth Taylor stayed and filmed there, and musician Rick Wakeman was married there.

If you join their ranks, your wedding can't fail to be a truly stand-out occasion.

Facilities

Cley Windmill has a series of rooms, and a beautiful garden on the tip of the marshes, that would suit an intimate wedding.

The Sitting Room

This circular room is ideal for a tranquil ceremony. The wedding day atmosphere is heightened by the tall windows, natural light and antique furniture. For colder winter weddings, a roaring fire is available to keep your guests nice and toasty while you say 'I do'.

The Marquee

If you'd rather have a bigger wedding, then you are welcome to install a marquee just outside the windmill. This allows your guests to spill out into the garden behind, and enjoy the sun while you say your vows.

The Windmill Dining Room

The beamed dining room, originally built in 1713, is a wonderful space for a small wedding breakfast, and if you stay the night they can also provide a delicious dinner.

Packages

Cley Windmill offers a range of different packages depending on when and what you wish to hire.

Ceremony only hire - This includes use of their wedding licence, garden, grounds and communal rooms for three hours.

Weekend wedding hire - This offers exclusive hire of all of the above from Friday to Sunday, as well as breakfast and accommodation for 20.

Leisurely weekend wedding hire - This also includes all of the above, as well as a late breakfast on the Sunday.

Midweek wedding 1 or 2 night hire - This option allows you to hire two bedrooms, includes breakfast, accommodation for 20 and exclusive use of their wedding licence.

Leisurely midweek 2 night wedding hire - This includes all of the above, but offers a late breakfast on the day of checkout.

Catering

Cley Windmill has talented chefs that, depending on the time of year, can arrange tasty canapés or an afternoon Norfolk cream tea for your reception.

They are also happy to create a wedding breakfast from their scrumptious suggested menus. These come with a range of delicious main courses, for example their roasted strip-loin of local beef, or pan roasted loin of cod.

Accommodation

If you chose to stay the night at Cley Windmill, you will be treated to a uniquely designed room. The B&B rooms accommodate 16, and the self-catering cottage another four.

The beautiful Dovecote room is ideal for the bridal party to get ready in, or equally for the newlyweds to spend their evening.
