Barnstaple Guildhall

The historic Guildhall of the Devonshire town of Barnstaple is now available for stunning civil wedding ceremonies. Bask in the Regency style architecture of the grand old building while exchanging vows and rings in the Guildhall itself, or have your ceremony in the glorious Main Chamber, which is considerably larger and at one time used to serve as the town's Courtroom.

The Grade II*-listed Guildhall can accommodate 30+ wedding guests, and up to 140 can fit in the Main Chamber. Receptions are welcome at nearby St Anne's Arts and Community Centre, so the entire day can be celebrated in the centre of Barnstaple.

History

The historic Guildhall has been a central part of Barnstaple society since its construction in 1826, and the Main Chamber used to be the town's Courtroom. Both facilities are now civil ceremony licensed. Barnstaple itself is a town rich in history, from Norman beginnings to being the birthplace of the author John Gay, and the Guildhall was made a listed building in 1951.

Facilities

The Main Chamber

This room has been fundamental to the town's most important events since its establishment, when it acted as Barnstaple's Courtroom. It is now used as a location for events such as the Mayor-Making and the Barnstaple Fair Proclamation Ceremony and boasts portraits of past councillors on its walls, as well as a picture of William Rock, Barnstaple benefactor, and John Gay, an 18th-century poet and playwright who was born in the town.

Your guests will admire the architecture of this majestic room, and as you walk up the aisle you will feel just like town royalty.

Civil Ceremony Capacity - 140 Guests

The Guildhall

Located in the town centre, this building is Grade II*-listed and boasts a beautiful interior, suitable for lavish ceremonies. It can easily accommodate thirty guests in the centre of the chamber, or more if the rear gallery and side boxes are brought into use.

Civil Ceremony Capacity - 30+ Guests

Reception

Couples are invited to use St Anne Arts and Community Centre for their wedding reception. Perfect for an intimate celebration, the centre is 100 metres away from the Guildhall and is one of Barnstaple's earliest buildings, dating back to the 14th century.

Accommodation

There is a variety of hotels or B&Bs to choose from in the town itself. Barnstaple is well connected to the rest of North Devon.
